|
Minoxidil(2, 4-diamino-6-piperidinopyrimidine-3-oxide), is used to control severe hypertension and causes a hypertrichosis in most patient treated with it. We tried to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of 3% minoxidil solution on thirty-two patients with male pattern baldness or alopecia areata.
Patients were treated with topical application of 3% minoxidil solution twice a day for 5 months.
The effect was assessed by the appearance or increase in number of vellus hairs or terminal hairs on bald areas.
1) The effect of topical application of 3% minoxidil solution in patients with male pattern baldness: by month 5, we found the effect in 12 of 16 patients(75%).
2) The effect of the topical application of 3% minoxidil solution in patients with alopecia areata,: month 5, we found the effect in 7 of 10 patients(70%).
3) The degree of efficacy was related to the duration of the therapy.
4) In the 32 patients with 3% minoxidil solution, significant side effect was not founded.
The results indicate that topical minoxidil has positive effect on male pattern baldness and alopecia areata and no systemic side effect.
